How to Add a Check Mark to a PDF (Tick Any Box)
Consent forms, registration sheets, surveys, insurance paperwork — they all have little boxes waiting for a tick. If you need to add a check mark to a PDF, there's no reason to print the page just to make a few marks with a pen. You can tick every box on screen, make each mark sit neatly inside its square, and download the finished document in a few minutes.
PDFedit24 doesn't have a dedicated checkbox button. It doesn't need one. The two tools it does have — Text and Sign — cover every way people mark a form, and they work on any PDF, including scanned forms with no interactive fields at all. Here's how to use each.
Two ways to mark a box
Type a symbol with the Text tool. You type a character such as ✓, ✔, X, or V and drag it into the box. Text is rendered to an image before it goes into the PDF, so any symbol your browser can display will work, and the recipient doesn't need any special font to see it. Typed marks are crisp and consistent, which makes this the best option for most forms.
Draw the mark with the Sign tool. You draw a tick or a circle by hand with your mouse, trackpad, or finger. It looks like a pen mark, and it's the natural choice for "circle one" questions.
| Typed symbol (Text) | Hand-drawn (Sign) | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Clean and uniform | Natural, pen-like |
| Many boxes | Fast once size is set | Slower, draw each one |
| Circling an answer | Possible with ○ but awkward | Easy |
| Best for | Checkboxes on forms | Surveys, "circle one" questions |
Method 1: type a check mark
- Open the PDFedit24 editor and choose your PDF.
- Select the Text tool on the left.
- Click on the box you want to tick.
- Type ✓, ✔, X, or V and press Enter.
- Drag the mark into the middle of the box.
- Adjust the Size until the mark fits inside the square.
How to type ✓ on your keyboard
X and V are already on your keyboard, and either one is universally understood as "selected." If you'd like a proper check mark:
- Windows: press the Windows key and the period key (.) together to open the emoji and symbol panel, then search for "check".
- Mac: press Control + Command + Space to open the Character Viewer and search "check mark".
- Phone: look in the symbols or emoji section of your keyboard — or simply copy this one: ✓
A quick note on emoji: the green ✅ emoji works too, but it looks out of place on a formal document. The plain ✓ or ✔ symbols, or a simple X, read as more professional.
If a form says "fill in the box completely" — common on surveys and ballots designed to be scanned — type a solid square (■) instead and size it to cover the box. It's the on-screen equivalent of shading the square in with a pen, and it leaves no doubt about which option you chose.
Making the mark fit the box
- Size. Aim for a mark about the height of the box, or a touch smaller. A mark that's too big spills over the label next to it and can make it unclear which option you picked.
- Color. Black is fine. Blue is a common choice when you want marks to stand out from the printed form so the reviewer can spot them quickly.
- Bold. Turning on bold makes a thin ✓ or V noticeably clearer, especially at small sizes.
- Zoom. Zoom in with the + button to drop the mark precisely in the center of the box, then click the zoom percentage (%) to fit the page and check it.
- Repeat quickly. Once you've set the size and color on the first box, the rest are just click, type, Enter, drag.
Method 2: draw a check mark or circle
- Select the Sign tool.
- Set Width fairly thin and choose a Color.
- Draw a tick over the box — or a circle around the option you want.
- On a computer, a drawn mark stays exactly where you drew it, so zoom in and draw right on the box. Moving or resizing a drawing works on phones only.
On a computer, strokes drawn within 7 seconds of the previous one are grouped into a single "Signature" item in the Changes panel. If you want to be able to remove each mark separately, pause for more than 7 seconds between marks.
On a phone, the Sign tool opens a drawing dialog in the middle of the screen. Draw your mark there, tap Insert, and drag it into place. If the stroke comes out wobbly, tap Clear and try again.
Drawing really shines for survey-style questions: "Circle the number that best describes…" A hand-drawn circle around the answer looks exactly like someone did it with a pen, which is what the form designer expected.
Fixing mistakes
- Ticked the wrong box a moment ago? The ↶ Undo button (Ctrl+Z) removes your last action.
- For something you added earlier on a computer, click the ✕ next to it in the Changes panel on the right, or choose the Delete tool and click the mark. On a phone, tap the mark to select it, then tap Delete in the bottom bar.
- Marks that were already printed in the original PDF can't be removed. If you received a form with the wrong boxes pre-filled, ask the sender for a fresh copy.
Forms with lots of boxes
Consent forms in particular tend to split agreement into required and optional items, each with its own box. Before you click Done →, scroll through every page to make sure you haven't missed one — an unticked required box is a classic reason for a form to be sent back.
If the form also has blanks to fill in, the guide to filling out a PDF form online covers typing names, addresses, and dates neatly. For consent and permission forms specifically, see signing a consent or application form.
Nothing leaves your device
Everything happens in your browser. The PDF isn't uploaded to a server while you add check marks or your signature, and when you click Done → the finished file is saved directly to your device with "_signed" added to its name.
Common questions
Can I just click a checkbox and have it ticked? No — the editor doesn't detect form fields. You place a typed or drawn mark on the box yourself. The upside is that it works on scanned and flat forms that have no clickable fields.
Will the ✓ symbol show up correctly for the person I send it to? Yes. Text is turned into an image before it's added to the PDF, so it doesn't depend on the recipient's fonts or PDF viewer. If the font you picked lacks the symbol, your device's default font draws it instead, so take a quick look before downloading.
Should I use a check mark or an X? Either is widely accepted. Follow the form's instructions if it says "check" or "mark with X"; otherwise use whichever you prefer and stay consistent.
Can I copy one check mark to other boxes? There's no copy feature. With the size and color already set, adding another typed mark takes just a few seconds per box.
Does this work on a phone? Yes. Typed marks are entered in a dialog in the middle of the screen — tap Insert to place them — and drawn marks use the signing dialog. More on that in signing a PDF on your phone.
A handful of tick boxes isn't worth warming up the printer for. Open your form in the PDFedit24 editor and mark them on screen.
